In this workshop we will dive into the Nerikomi decorative process established in Japan. This starts with creating a patterned block of clay using layers of colored slip and cut-out shapes, then slicing through the cross section to reveal a pattern. The patterned sections can then be used as an applied decoration or a slab-built piece. We will focus on planning and building painted layers to form our patterns, create a slab-built piece, and test the many ways to utilize the colorful scraps you'll have left over!
week 1 - plan and build your patterned block of clay
week 2 - build pieces with our patterned clay
week 3 - refine and glaze our pieces
