Adult Classes 

Classes will meet once a week for either 4, 6, or 8 weeks. Class fee includes instruction, use of equipment, and either 25lbs. of clay for 6 and 8 week classes or 12 pounds for 4 week classes, studio glazes and firings for pottery produced in class. Additional clay may be purchased. All clay is $35 for a 25lb. bag, except Porcelain which is $50 per 25lbs. The price of clay includes the cost of firings and studio glazes, with the exception of extra large pieces an additional firing fee may be added. Class sizes are limited to 7-10 students, which allows each student lots of individual attention from the instructor and opportunity to collaborate with classmates. If a student registers for a class and is not able to attend the session they may transfer their registration to a future class but no refund will be given. If a student misses a class, they may make up their class time in an open studio session during their present class session. Once the session is completed make up classes are no longer valid. Payment for a class must be made to secure your spot in a class. Once a class session begins classes can not transfer to another individual. Savannah's Clay Spot will not be responsible for any unclaimed pottery or clay after six weeks of the date of the last class attended. ​Get a taste for what's happening in the studio with the images below.

This class is an introduction to the potter's wheel, focusing on wedging, centering, shaping, trimming, and glazing. A variety of functional forms including cups, bowls, and plates will be taught. The class is designed for those who are interested in trying something fun and new and all pottery will be finished with food safe glazes.

Pottery for the Gardener
This class is for those who love the idea of making a container to hold fresh cut flowers, planters for new growth or ceramic flowers that are always in bloom. All skill levels are welcome and this class invites potter's creating on the wheel or hand builders. Create a set of individual planter/vase forms or focus on one large full of expression work of art, such as a garden totom. A green thumb not required, just the love to make!

Spring Things, Home and Garden Pottery
Get ready for Spring by creating unique, one of a kind handmade pottery for your home or garden setting. All levels are welcomed. Demonstrations will include both wheel and hand building techniques and lots of individual attention will be given. Students will be encouraged to work at their own pace, independently on their projects with the opportunity to collaborate with classmates and instructor.

Surface Design with Slip and Carving

Get ready to have a lot of fun in this class learning how to use and decorate with colored slip. Don't just reserve slip for scoring but use it to add texture and color to the surface of your clay forms. Slip trail it from a bottle, paint it with a brush, or use your hands to apply it to the surface of your clay. Your forms will be transformed and changed. If your looking for a fun way to decorate, this is the class for you. Open to all methods of making, Thrown or hand built.

"Creative Foodies"
Do you love making, serving and enjoying fun savory dishes? Then this is the class for you! Create unique pottery for presenting your favorite specialty dishes or for use in your everyday routines. This course is a continued wheel class were we will explore dishes for your Sunday brunches, serve Berries and Cream in individual berry colander with a mini creamer or focus on a coffee/tea set with a cream and sugar  with honey jar learning to make a lids that fit. Serving can be impressive and just as fun as eating!

Animal Instincts
Animals have been the muse of artists since the beginning of history.  Animal influence in ceramics is very prevalent in contemporary artists’ work. We will create works inspired by animals using hand-built and thrown forms, thrown and altered, and a variety of surface techniques for texture, image and color.  We will discuss and experiment with using subtle elements of an animal in a form to communicate an idea or aesthetic on functional forms such as bowls, cups, pitchers, etc. Sculptural techniques for small works will also be shown.  ​​

Layers of Fun
This class is devoted to the decorative surface of the clay. Each week we'll focus on a new surface technique. Each student will be encouraged to layer multiple techniques to create a complimentary surface to your pottery forms.

Print It on Clay! The Printed Image on Clay
This class is devoted to surface design and an exploration of different ways to print images on clay. Students will learn how to take images and make them into silkscreens to print as well as transfer images printed on a variety of materials to create a unique effect.Students will be inspired and can push their work in directions after this fun class.

Best Dishes for an Artful Home
Want to explore new shapes and forms to create new dishes for your home? Then this is the class for you. Come to class with your favorite recipes in mind and make a custom dish to serve in on. With the holidays in mind create pieces to entertain with created on the pottery wheel or hand built. Bring on the Holidays, and enjoy making handmade works of art.

Intermediate Wheel class

Explore new forms on the pottery wheel inspired by that chill in the air. In this wheel class we will focus on hot beverage forms such as coffee and hot tea cups, the popular coffee pour overs, teapots, and many more. Make pottery to feed your soul and warm your heart.

Print It! Silkscreen Printing on Clay
Take any image, a favorite picture, drawing, or even photograph and learn to print it onto any clay surface. This class is open to all skill levels and clay processes. The instructor will go through the steps of taking your image and turning it into a silk screen and show special techniques for printing on both flat and curved surfaces. Weather you throw a form on the potter's wheel, hand build a platter, or make a series of tiles your clay work will instantly become personalized and unique with your own individualized image. ​  ​

Challenge yourself to create more complex forms by throwing bigger and better pottery now that you have the basics down. Students will be encouraged to design pottery to develop and push their work forward creating their own personal style. Expand your repertoire of forms by creating new works that will be more sophisticated and get you out of your comfort zone.

Handmade Cups and Mugs for the Artful Home
This class is inspired by the Savannah's Clay Community's up coming SIP Exhibition. In this class we will focus on form and design pushing you out of your comfort zone and fine tone your pottery skills to create new work that is exhibition worthy. Devote Monday mornings the to creating a new body of work so you will have lots of choices to make. Our class will focus on all the details of size, handles and a strong design creating functional works of art.

Sgraffito Spectacular
Hand build or throw any basic form and learn how to transform the surface with a texturized carving technique called sgraffito. Students can be as fancy or loose was they want to be. Doodle or be very specific with pattern and decorations or carefully plan out a particular image and see it come to life through clay.

Ceramic Jewelry with Jennifer Huskey
Spend morning with artist Jennifer Huskey creating one of a kind ceramic jewelry. Jennifer will talk about her inspirations and show how you too and create your line of jewelry using similar material's that she uses in her practice of making in her studio. In the last class she will show how to finish your pieces with her techniques with leather cording so you will walk out of the studio with finished wearable works of art and them some. "Anything but Round"
A continuing on the wheel class

Traditionally thrown forms right off the potter's wheel tend to be round and symmetrical. In this class our focus will be trying fun new methods turning wheel thrown shapes into different and nontraditional ones. We'll be making squares and ovals, altering and darting to create a new vocabulary of forms pushing your work in a new direction.

On the Surface
Surface techniques can completely change the design and meaning of a form.  Broaden your use of your works’ surfaces, or if you’ve never worked with clay, this is the perfect opportunity to express yourself through a different medium.  Experiment and have fun using your work as a blank canvas! This class will focus on surface techniques such as sgraffito, slip layering, mishima, image transfer, stencil, and how you can use multiple techniques to create a stunning surface for your work. Multiple artists and aesthetics will be discussed in class.

Make holiday inspired service wares either to use at your holiday events, or give them as gifts to loved ones. In this workshop we will focus on making either on the potter's wheel or by hand building functional plates and bowls that are perfect for your holiday festivities. We will makes forms the first class, decorate the second and glaze in the third class.

Celebrate spring and adorn your garden with a fun garden totems. This class is open to both potter's and hand builder's where you can create your segments with several different techniques when building with clay. These totems once built can be installed either outside or inside, you choice.

This class is open to both wheel throwers and hand builders who are interested in a fun new decorating technique. Change the shape of your forms to make a new surface with carved or cut away lines and angles.

Dinning In, Pottery for the Table
Weather for a casual family dinner, or formal dinner party the table serves as a meeting place to share a meal. Let your handmade pottery complement your meal by creating a table landscape of your own artistic creations. In this class students will be encouraged to work in a series or related theme. Make a collection of candlesticks or flower vases to run down the middle of your table. Or create unique service pieces to present your favorite dishes. Cheers and let the entertaining begin.

Kitchen Aide Fun for the Potter 
In this class Students will create fun and unique pottery for the kitchen. Projects will range from wheel thrown canister sets to a ceramic colander to a wheel thrown lemon juicer. Students will create, decorate, and glaze their projects in this three session workshop. Let your handmade works of art function and aide you during your daily cooking and serving rituals.
This class is perfect for making pottery to give as gifts for the holidays or to use during holiday entertaining.

Be inspired by historial Chinese, Japanese, and Korean elegant forms in clay. Asian pottery has a rich history in clay and has served as a strong influence to many modern day potters. In this class take a walk back through history and be inspired. We will focus on form and recreate historical shapes in your own individual version.

This class is open to those interested in expressing their love of nature through the medium of clay. We will be using images in nature to inspire form, texture, and color to create functional or sculptural works of art. Use leaves right out of your garden to imprint onto the surface of your clay, or shells you collected on a vacation to create texture, or create planters to bring the outdoors into your indoor world. Demonstrations will be given both on and off the wheel and students are welcome to work at their own pace in their favorite way to contruct.

Winter Time Romance making Luminaries, Lanterns, and Candlesticks
Create elegance to any setting by creating your own unique ceramic luminaries, lanterns, or candlesticks.. This class is open to both hand builders, wheel throws, and sculptures who enjoy cutting and piercing clay shapes out of forms that will allow a warm glow of light to travel through once fired and completed. You'll create one of a kind luminaries and lanters that will be functional as well and true works of art.

Handmade Beads, Pendants,and Beautiful Broaches
In this fun class students will explore all the fun ways to create fabulous jewelry out of clay. We will create beads of different sizes and shapes by hand and with the help of the clay extruder. But we will not end there, Students will continue making other decorative wearables such as Pendants and Broaches and even small beads for earring can be made. Make a whole new collection for yourself or to be given as gifts.

Surface design Workshop
This three week class will focus on different surface design techniques. Fun techniques such as using and learning to make your own spriggs, and stamps will be covered as well as an introduction to making your own silk screen. Learn to use colored slips and underglazes to bring color to your work. All these techniques can be applied to hand built dish forms making great new serving dishes for your holidays.

This Class is inspired by Holiday decorator who loves breaking out all those precious ornaments that hold personal meanings. Make ornaments for your tree or just to decorate your home with to bring joy and love to your home. Three busy sessions will consist of making, decorating, and glazing.

Holiday Gift Giver Clay Sessions 
This class session is inspired by the Holidays. Make handmade goodies to use during your holiday entertaining, or wrap and give as special gifts to loved ones. This class is open to both Hand builders and wheel throwers, both. Three busy sessions will consist of making forms the first night, trimming and decorating the second and the third session is all about glazing. All work will be fired and ready for picking up Monday, December 19th, just in the nick of time!
